COMMLEAD social impact final

Tasked to find a social issues within our field, and solve in a creative approach.
Issue: Representation of Latinos in the Media
Goal(s): By documenting the stories of Latino students in academia, I sought to celebrate my culture's collective achievement overlooked by mainstream media. The project is a reflection of my family's personal journey, and hoped contribute an inclusive representation of Latinos within the UW community.
the issue & Research
Latinos have to be subjected to stereotypes to be on screen - labeled as "other" or a threat in media representations
Little to no representation behind the screen
Meanwhile, Latinos are advancing greatly in higher education
creative Approach & Solution
Solution: Create a photography series that captured a part of my family's story in academia.
Similar Example: PBS The Latinx Photography Project

- Document empowerment stories and achievements of Latinos that aren’t highlighted in the media
- Inspire Latinos and other creatives to document and articulate their own narratives and communities
- Community Engagement: Collaborate with El Centro de La Raza & Kolors Studio
